She was always there through every birthday, breakup, and breakdown. He called her “his person.” She held his secrets, his fears, his dreams.

Then he fell for someone else and told her excitedly. She smiled and said, “She’s beautiful”, then cried herself to sleep. For years she thought her love, her presence, and her sacrifice would make her the one, but love doesn’t follow logic, or fairness, or effort. “You owe me nothing,” she wrote in her journal, “but I owe myself distance.”
